GANDALF + FRODO

I'm not a Lord of the Rings mega-fan.

However, I love the movies and I'm always down for a weekend-trilogy-watch.

I don't fully remember, but I'm fairly confident one of the moments towards the end of the trilogy entails Frodo in the thick of things - psychologically, emotionally, physically, etc.

Then there is this moment in which he recalls what Gandalf had said to him, maybe something like "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us" (or something like that.)

It's this recall moment that inspries Frodo to press on.

This is a familiar kind of moment in many movies.

Something similar is happening in 1 Timothy.

1 TIMOTHY 1:18

Paul is writing to Timothy, and he says this: 18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,"

Paul knows that Timothy is in (and will continue to be from season-to-season) a time of trial and struggle.

What does Paul command Timothy to do?

Recall the prophecies spoken about him so that he may fight the battle well.

Paul is inviting Timothy into a Frodo-moment.

RECALLING THE PROPHETIC

There are a few takeways that I think may be helpful when reflecting on this. It's a good thing to:

  • Recall the past
    • NOT for the purpose of nostalgia or pining for simpler times but
    • FOR the purpose of pressing into the future and fighting the battle well
  • Be a part of a "prophetic" church (which simply means a church that acknowledge and practices the prophetic in church (more about this in a future post I imagine
  • Prophecy over folks to give them encouragement to hold onto when things get difficult
  • Test, receive, and remember prophetic words spoken about you

In other words, Scripture is the best source for encouragement, however, remembering the work of the Spirit in your life via recalling prophetic words spoken about you will help you press into the future and continue to fight the battle well.

Render, receive, and recall the prophetic.
