COMPETITIVE BASEBALL

In elementary school, I played on a great baseball team.

We won lots of games, lots of tournaments, and even a city championship (a big deal in the 3rd grade!)

The summer of 5th grade our coach put in a "competitive" baseball league (i.e. - a league outside the school district.

It was governed by age, and when we showed up to our first game - we were clearly on the younger side of the age group.

These teams we were playing were much bigger than us.

I remember our team warming up and trembling a bit thinking, "These guys are huge. Who are these guys?"

A similar thing is happening in Matthew 21:10.

MATTHEW 21:10

Jesus is entering Jerusalem on a donkey and the crowd is shouting, "Hosanna to the son of David!"

When the people of Jerusalem see this scene the text says this:

"10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, 'Who is this?'"

This word "stirred" means to be shake, tremble, or be agitated of spirit.

In other words, the presence of Jesus and scene surrounding him made the people of Jerusalem tremble. "Who is this king?"

SHAKEN & STIRRED

There are a lot of things that are true about Jesus.

  • He calls us friend
  • He is a prince of peace
  • He is wonderful counselor
  • And more...

While there are many attributes of Jesus that recall a sense of comfort to us, it should not be lost on us that his presence also ought to:

  • Shake us
  • Stir us
  • Cause us to tremble

When we come to Jesus during Holy Week, we are reminded afresh that:

  • He is a friend and Lord
  • He is a counselor and director
  • He is gentle and vengeful

This Holy Week we are invited afresh to remember that the one that comforts us is also the one that makes us uncomfortable.
